MATERIALS:
4 tubes “Rafael Brand” Gimp. Lacing may be made with any desired color of gimp. 1 length of milliner’s wire for brim. Grosgrain ribbon.
STITCH:
Use pattern Stitch throughout.
PATTERN STITCH:
Insert hook into last space worked, pull through, insert hook into next space, pull through, thread over and pull through the 3 loops on hook, Ch 1 to hold stitch. To increase, insert hook into Ch-1 instead of next space.
CROWN:
Ch 3 and join with Sl St to form ring. 1st row: make 7 SC’s in ring. 2nd row: Make 1 P St in each S t of previous row. 3rd row: Make 1 P St in each previous row. (This makes 14 P Sts). 4th row: Make P Sts increasing in every other St. 5th to 14th rows: Make P Sts increasing in every seventh St but do not increase over previous increases. 15th row: Make 1 P St in each St of previous row. 16th row: Continue with P Sts making seven increases in a row. 17th row: Work same as 15th row. 18th row: Work same as 16th row. Continue with 1 P Sts alternating 15th and 16th rows until diameter of crown measures 7”. Continue making 1 P St in each St of previous row until depth of crown measures 6” from center top of edge. Last row: Make 1 SC in each St of previous row skipping over the Ch that holds the P St together, picking up back loop only.
BRIM:
1st row: Make 1 P St in each St of previous row. 2nd row: Make P Sts increasing in every sixth St. 3rd row: Make 1 P St in each St of previous row. 4th row: Make P Sts increasing in every sixth St. 5th to 7th rows: Make 1 P St in each St of previous row. 8th row: Make P Sts increasing in every eighth St. 9th and 10th rows: Make 1 P St in each previous row. 11th row: Make 1 P Sts increasing in every eleventh St.
12th row: Make 1 P St in each St of previous row. 13th row: Work in a milliner’s wire by making SC’s in each P St of previous row, skipping over the Ch that holds the P St together, end off.
LACING
Make chain about 6” long. Make fold in top of crown and lace as illustrated. Trim with ribbon.
