how to grade the pattern
dress manufacturers and commercial pattern companies have set a basis for grading patterns to conform with the established standard measurements. the method of grading patterns is by shifting each pattern piece from point to point as you go along. most manufacturers grade the patterns, 1-1/2” per size around bust, waist and hip, or 3/4” from center back for junior and misses sizes. the diagrams and instructions given below, are based on the 1-1/2” grade per size. grade the pattern pieces according to the measurements listed below, shifting each section as shown in diagrams 1, 3 and 5. diagrams 2, 4 and 6 indicate where the increases are made when grading one sze to another.

diagrams show where and how much to increase pattern, per size, for a 2-piece front and 2-piece back.
for the 2-piece front with a narrow side front section, use same method of grading as shown for style 2.
the measurements for grading each size are based on the 1-1/2” grade as shown above for the dress bodice.
