how to grade the pattern
dress manufacturers and commercial pattern companies have set a basis for grading patterns to conform with the established standard measurements. the method of grading patterns is by shifting each pattern piece from point to point as you go along. most manufacturers grade the patterns, 1-1/2” per size around bust, waist and hip, or 3/4” from center back for junior and misses sizes. the diagrams and instructions given below, are based on the 1-1/2” grade per size. grade the pattern pieces according to the measurements listed below, shifting each section as shown in diagrams 1, 3 and 5. diagrams 2, 4 and 6 indicate where the increases are made when grading one sze to another.

diagrams show where and how much to increase pattern, per size, for a 2-piece front and 2-piece back.
for the 2-piece front with a narrow side front section, use same method of grading as shown for style 2.
the measurements for grading each size are based on the 1-1/2” grade as shown above for the dress bodice.

(junior petite and teen sizes)
dress manufacturers and commercial pattern companies have agreed on a list of body measurements for junior petite figures, ranging in sizes 3,5,7,9 and 11, and for the teens in sizes 10, 12, 14 and 16.
they have also set a basis for grading these patterns from one size to another, as shown below in detail. the junior petite samples are usually made up in size 7; the teens, in size 12. according to the chart of measurements listed below, the increases per size, around bust, waist and hip, are as follows:
for junior petite, the grade per size is3/4”. for teens, the grade per size is 1-1/2”.
how to grade the pattern
grade the back, front and sleeve according to the measurements listed below, and use the method of shifting the pattern pieces as shown in diagrams 1, 3 and 5; diagrams 2, 4 and 6 show where the increases are made, when grading the pattern pieces from one size to another.
